Kovvur is a major town in West Godavari district. It is situated adjacent to the west bank of the Godavari River. Kovvur is an important town in West Godavari District due to its location on the sacred banks of River Godavari, also well connected by Rail, Road NH 5. Kovvur is known as pensioners’ paradise as many retired people prefer to settle in this town as it hosts the ever-pleasant Godavari Ghat.

There are three bridges across the Godavari River linking Kovvur with Rajahmundry. The oldest of these was a railway bridge which is now abandoned, built by Sir Arthur Cotton, which was opened for traffic from August 30, 1900. Subsequently, in 1974, a rail-cum-road bridge was built. In 1995 another exclusive rail bridge was built by the Indian Railways before abandoning the bridge built by Sir Arthur Cotton. The new bridge is the second largest rail bridge in India after the Ganga Rail bridge. There is another road bridge, without interfering Rajahmundry, under construction which is nearing its completion by 2015.

Religious Places

Kovvuru is known for its famous Goshpada Kshetram. There is a big chain of temples located in kovvur Sivalayam, Veerabrahmendra Swamy Temple, Gayatridevi temple, Ramalayam, Krishna temple, Shirdi Saibaba temple, Gayatri Gosala. One of the most renowned Goudeeya Muttamu is situated in this town opposite to the “Lanchila Revu” near the banks of River Godavari, where many of Lord Sri Krishna’s “Bhajanalu” and “Parayanamulu” will take place each and every day. Other famous temples are Sri Ramamananda Gowdiya Mutt, Sree Veerabrahmendra swamy temple, Sri Anjaneyaswami temple, Kovvuramma Temple, Varada Gopalaswami Temple etc. Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, Sri C S B B S Swamiji, Santhimatam Srinivasapuram


As of 2001 India census, Kovvur had a population of 39,193. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Kovvur has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 66%. In Kovvur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. It is the only town in Andhra Pradesh where its literacy rate is increasing almost for 3 years.

Infrastructure and Transportation

The Kovvur railway station has 3 platforms which are very huge and sufficiently designed without any wastage of space and the newly proposed Kovvur-“Badhrachalam Road” route, which makes this town a potential railway junction. Andhra Sugars Ltd and Avanti Feeds Ltd are the major industries providing employment and livelihood to the population of Kovvur. Kovvur is an ideal town for industrial / residential / tourism / agricultural development. Papi Hill is another tourist place to look out for. Kovvur is well connected to major cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada by road and railway line.

Development has been quite rapid during the past few years and trend of urbanization has been settling in only due to the concreted efforts of Sri Chandrababu Naidu, CM of Andhra Pradesh who improved the roads and is the main reason for the introduction of one-way traffic of the Main Road. Many apartments are being built and they are sold as hotcakes implying that many people are willing to settle here. Nearest airport to the town of Kovvur is Madhurapudi(Rajahmundry) which is 25km away. Recently the APSRTC Bus Terminus was shut down due to high competition from share autos, which incurred losses upon APSRTC. This place has been a part of Telugu Film industry in numerous movies like Swathi Muthyam, Seetaramayya Gari Manavaralu, Murari, simhadri, Mangatayaru tiffin center, Kottabangaru lokam etc.

New Bridge

A new Bridge constructed few years back which provide connection between Kovvur Andhra Pradesh and Rajamundry Andhra Pradesh, India. Its only the Rail Bridge with U shaped curves on it. It has increased the speed of the trains between the two places mentioned above. Godavari Arch Bridge The bridge, built by the Hindustan Construction Company, for the Indian Railways, was designed by Bureau BBR, Switzerland, and checked by Leonard Andrea and Partners, Germany. Construction on the bridge began in 1991 and lasted till 1997. It was commissioned for passenger traffic in March 1997 and became fully operational for running trains by the Indian Railways from 2003.

Road Cum Railway Bridge

This Rail Cum Road Bridge is longest of its kind in Asia and second longest in the world. Its total length is 4.732 km. Finished in 1972 and inaugurated by the then President of India, Fakruddin Ali Ahmed, its total construction cost is 63 crores in those days. Locally it is called Kovvur bridge by people of Rajahmundry, as it connects Rajahmundry city with Kovvur town. Its also the most important connecting point of Agriculturally Rich East and west Godavari Districts.

Old Godavari Bridge

The construction of the bridge commenced on November 11, 1897, and opened for traffic on August 30, 1900. The Bridge was named after Sir Arthur Elibank Havelock, the then Governor of Madras. Frederick Thomas Granville Walton served as the engineer-in-chief assisted by executive engineers R.A. Delanougerede, F.D. Couchman, J.E. Eaglesome. It has 56 spans each of 45.7 metres (150 ft) and is 2,754 metres (9,035 ft) long. Having served its full life span of 100 years, it was decommissioned in 1997, and Godavari Arch Bridge was built as a replacement for the bridge.
